Inauguration of the Consulate General of the Republic of Malawi in Laayoun
The Republic of Malawi inaugurated on July 29, 2021, its Consulate General in Laayoun, that is the 12th diplomatic representation opened in the capital of the Moroccan Sahara and the 18th as an African country, in addition to the ten Consulates General present in the city of Dakhla.

The inauguration of this Consulate took place in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatirates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and his counterpart from Malawi, Mr. Eisenhower Nduwa Mkaka.

At the end of the opening ceremony, Mr. Nasser Bourita and his counterpart held a joint press conference during which they welcomed the opening of the Consulate General of Malawi in Laayoun, which is an addition to the Consulates previously inaugurated in the southern provinces, thanks to the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him.

This Royal vision provides the appropriate framework for the implementation of Morocco's African strategy that promotes openness towards all regions of the continent and the will to make the southern provinces a link between Morocco and its African depth, underlined Mr. Bourita.

Noting that a third of the Consulates opened so far in Laayoun and Dakhla belong to African countries representing all regions of Africa, Mr. Bourita highlighted that four countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) now have diplomatic representations in the Moroccan Sahara: DRC, Zambia, Eswatini and Comoros.

Mr. Nduwa Mkaka reiterated Malawi's unwavering support for Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Sahara, while affirming that his country will continue to advocate for the role of the UN as the exclusive and consensual framework for the resolution of this regional conflict.

The Malawian official welcomed the opening of their Consulate in Laayoun, which will mark a new era of Moroccan-Malawian strengthened relations and the increase of cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.

Mr. Nduwa Mkaka also expressed the desire of Malawi to seize all the opportunities offered by the region, given its high potential to become the future economic hub of Africa and so, contributing positively to its development.
