Mr. Nasser Bourita: Morocco Defends Idea of Solidarity and Knowledge-based Multilateralism
Rabat,(MOFA) - Morocco defends the idea of a multilateralism that is "pragmatic, uninhibited, flexible and based on knowledge of facts and solidarity", stressed on Friday Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita.

"Morocco has fully adhered to all initiatives aimed at adapting the multilateral system to the complexity of the challenges of the contemporary world, defending the idea of a pragmatic, uninhibited, flexible and solidarity and knowledge-based multilateralism", said Mr. Bourita at a virtual ministerial meeting of the Alliance for Multilateralism on the theme "Strengthening the Multilateral Health Architecture".

In accordance with the High Vision of His Majesty the King, Morocco has never ceased to defend multilateralism which is "above all solidarity-based" and to call for special attention to the particular challenges facing Africa, he insisted.

Faithful to the spirit of solidarity which underlies His High Vision for the development of Africa, the Sovereign launched an initiative at the level of Heads of State intended to establish an operational framework to support African States in the different phases of managing the pandemic, he said.

As part of this Royal Initiative, Morocco has sent donations made of personal protective equipment and medicines to fifteen African countries, added Mr. Bourita, saying that it is a "concrete manifestation of solidarity" for the benefit of brotherly African countries.

"The first African initiative for Africa, it is a proof of the capacity of the African continent to meet its own challenges by itself", said the Minister during this meeting which is being held at a time when the pandemic of COVID-19 is entering a “complex phase in which the exhilaration of a return to normality, the legitimate fears of a second wave and questions about the emerging multilateral system are mixed together”.

Mr. Bourita stressed the need to lay the foundations for a new multilateral order that is "coherent and flexible" to deal with the complexity of emerging threats, including that of pandemics.

Anxious to lay the bases for a new system of international health security based on the consistency of decisions and the pooling of resources, Morocco will organize in Marrakesh with Rwanda, the World Health Organization and the World Bank, the first High-Level Meeting on Diplomacy for Health Security and Emergency Preparedness, placed under the joint High Patronage of His Majesty the King and His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, he said.

Morocco fully supports the initiative launched by HE Dr. Teodoro Ribera Neumann (Chilean Minister for External Relations) aimed at setting up a new flexible legal instrument to ensure health security for all, and stands ready to contribute to it by sharing his national experience in managing the pandemic, he added.

A multilateralism adapted to global challenges "can only be boosted by concrete, uninhibited and fact-based initiatives", like the action of the Alliance for Multilateralism, the Minister added.  “As affinity states, we must remain vigilant not to dissipate efforts and to preserve the effectiveness and the coherence of collective action, with the ultimate objective of building the capacities of the United Nations”, he said.
