MFA Nasser Bourita Holds Talks with His Burundian Counterpart

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita held, on Monday, a meeting via videoconference with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation of the Republic of Burundi, Mr. Albert Shingiro, within the framework of the excellent Moroccan-Burundian relations of solidarity and consultation.

During this meeting, the two Ministers lauded bilateral relations, marked by fraternity and solidarity thanks to the insightful will of the Heads of State of both brotherly countries. They also expressed their satisfaction with the fruitful results of the high-level visit exchanges and which will have to be reflected, eminently, by the official opening of a resident Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Burundi.

The two parties also stressed the importance of further promote regular political consultations on bilateral, regional and international issues of common interest, while welcoming the shared views on the various matters that were discussed.

Strongly attached to the principle of respect for the sovereignty of States, the Burundian party reiterated its support for the initiatives of the UN Secretary General and of the Security Council as well as that of the Kingdom of Morocco that should lead to a final settlement of the dispute over the Sahara.

It also reaffirmed its support for the exclusive role of the United Nations in reaching a lasting political solution to this dispute and for Decision 693 adopted by the AU Summit in Nouakchott in 2018.

Mr; Bourita and Mr. Shingiro also insisted on the importance of strengthening communication and coordination in the various multilateral platforms (AU, UN, etc.), in order to make the diplomatic actions, undertaken at the level of these bodies, more homogeneous with the official positions adopted by the two countries on different issues of common interest.

They also agreed to support their respective candidacies within regional and international organizations and expressed their determination to forge an ambitious partnership touching on many areas of cooperation, welcoming, in this regard, the adoption by the two countries of the cooperation roadmap covering the 2021-2024 period.

The two Ministers stressed the importance of setting up a Morocco-Burundi Business Council in order to promote trade ties.
