Morocco co-chaired, with the Netherlands, on 14 and 15 May 2014, in Marrakech, the first expert meeting of the Global Counterterrorism (GCTF) around the theme of the foreign terrorists fighters.
This meeting, which is part of an initiative launched jointly by the two countries during the latest ministerial meeting of this Forum, held in New York, last September, gathered more than 80 experts representing nearly twenty countries and regional and international Organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union.
This meeting follows on the inaugural conference of this Initiative, which was held in The Hague, on 19 and 20 February 2014, in addition to the discussions relating to this theme at the 5th meeting of the Coordinating Committee of the GCTF, hosted in Rabat, on 2 and 3 April.
The experts meeting is devoted to examining various aspects related to this issue, most notably, the legal and practical measures undertaken by the States to prevent this transnational threat, and the means to strengthen cooperation in this area.
The conclusions and the best practices identified by the experts, will be submitted at the next ministerial meeting of the GCTF, which will be held in New York, next September.
Co-chaired by the United States and Turkey, the GCTF is an informal multilateral platform for combatting terrorism, which accounts for around thirty states and international and regional Organizations. The Forum aims to enhance cooperation in this field, through mobilizing the necessary expertise and resources, in order to meet the needs of the members and to strengthen international cooperation.
