Morocco-Africa: Strengthening historic relations.

Conscious of the deep roots of its African belonging, Morocco showed, since independence, its commitment to consolidate its historic cultural relations and those of cooperation with the African countries.

The Moroccan foreign policy was characterized, since the beginning, by the resolute and strong support of Morocco to the liberation struggle, led by the African countries against the colonial yoke, and by the consolidation of the African Unity, illustrated particularly by the creation of the African Unity Organization, of which Morocco was among the founders.

The Moroccan diplomatic action has had as a strategic goal to raise the level of cooperation with the African countries to that of a real active and strong partnership. It is within this framework that the Royal visits paid by His Majesty The King Mohammed VI, since His Enthronement, to various African countries, have given a new momentum to the relations with the brotherly African countries and a new impetus to the South-South Cooperation.

These Royal visits have brought about a series of agreements of cooperation in the fields of economic, technical, social, cultural and human developments, such as the fight against poverty and diseases, agriculture, food-processing, fisheries, education, training, water and irrigation management, basic infrastructures, urban management, information technologies, financial management and banks.

Conscious that the human being should be in the centre of any development strategy, Morocco has made of training an important and essential component of the cooperation programs with the African countries.

This policy undertaken by the Moroccan Agency of International Cooperation (MAIC), consists of presenting the Moroccan Know-How to executives and institutions from African countries.

Sharing experiences in the sectors where technology is used at a large scale has always been an important value in the cooperation relations of Morocco with the African countries. In this respect and in addition to the purely bilateral cooperation, the tripartite cooperation is perceived as an innovative tool for the transfer of expertise and know how to the African countries.

In the field of maintaining peace and security, Morocco exerts all necessary efforts to contribute to the consolidation of peace and stability in the African continent. It has always expressed its support to the United Nations initiatives to restore peace and stability in Africa and has put military contingents at the disposal of the UN peace keeping operations in the region.

In the same way, Morocco expresses its constant eagerness to contribute to the reconciliation efforts to restore, via its mediation, stability through dialogue and trust.

Morocco’s strategic vision gives a great importance to the economic aspect of the relations with the African countries. Accordingly, the Moroccan government makes the private sector more and more involved in order to reinforce the trade exchanges and to increase the investments of Morocco in the African space.

In parallel with the bilateral actions, Morocco remains very active at the level of the African regional Organizations, namely within the regional economic communities, with the ambition of consolidating the bonds to increase and diversify the trade and investment exchanges and to strengthen cooperation with the African regional groupings.

Morocco continues to put forward the questions related to Africa development and particularly the least advanced African countries, through the organization of International Meetings, in Morocco, on priority questions for Africa.

Besides this, Morocco undertakes the task of defending the African interests with the other countries and regional groupings, notably within the framework of Dialogues held between Africa and the rest of the world and within the International Organizations. The Moroccan diplomacy has always targeted to put Africa development questions in the centre of the international community’s concerns, namely in the United Nations and its specialized agencies.
