The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, received, On November, 15, 2023 in Rabat, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Mr. Péter Szijjártó.

During a press conference, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita,pointed out that the relations between Morocco and Hungary have significantly evolved in recent years, in accordance with the willingness of HM King Mohammed VI to diversify partnerships with EU countries.

Mr. Nasser Bourita, stressed that "we have worked together to establish a robust and distinctive cooperation model", underlining that the two countries share the same vision on a set of international issues, given that they are "two secular nations that trust their history and their future".

He added that the cooperation model established between the two countries could "serve as a reference to inspire our relations with other nations", especially since it is based on a genuine spirit of solidarity.

In this regard, Mr. Bourita welcomed Hungary's positions, which have always been characterized by their "clarity", particularly on national issues and more particularly on the Moroccan Sahara.

The two countries attach great importance to political dialogue between them, which has significant evolved, he noted, recalling the coordination of the two countries' positions on a set of issues, either during bilateral talks or on the sidelines of international meetings.

Regarding bilateral economic cooperation, the minister said that Hungarian economic stakeholders have contributed to the development of economic cooperation between the two countries, stressing that Morocco is currently one of Hungary's main trading partners at Arab and African levels.

Mr. Bourita also mentioned other aspects of bilateral cooperation, namely scholarships, tourism, air transport and technology.

Regarding Morocco's relations with the European Union, Bourita affirmed that "Hungary is a partner country which supports the strengthening of our relations with the Union, based on positions and standards founded on mutual respect, equality and common interests", adding that Hungary has always defended a balanced vision of relations between Morocco and the European Union.

The minister stressed that his meeting with his Hungarian peer was also an opportunity to discuss several regional and international issues, both in the Middle East and in other regions, adding that "our positions on these issues are often close and call for the promotion of security, peace and stability in the world”.

The visit of the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade to Morocco is “important” and “successful” which gives added value to the development of bilateral relations, he said, recalling the visit made by HM the King to Hungary in 2016, which gave strong impetus to developing strong relations between the two countries.

The Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Peter Szijjarto, highlighted Morocco's role as a responsible player and as a key partner of Hungary for peace and stability in the region and in Africa.

Hungary’s top diplomat pointed out that the Kingdom has a responsible policy in the fight against irregular migration.

Mr. Szijjarto also emphasized Morocco's clear and firm stance against terrorism, which is one of the reasons for illegal migration.

Pointing out that stability and peace in Africa depend on peace and security in Europe, the Hungarian minister stressed the importance of Morocco as a key partner of the European Union in these areas.

He also expressed Hungary's thanks to Morocco for its efforts to combat irregular migratory flows.

Mr. Peter Szijjarto praised, the level of cooperation relations between his country and Morocco.

The head of Hungarian diplomacy underlined the importance of this cooperation for the stability of Africa.

Mr. Szijjarto also underlined the need to promote bilateral economic relations, noting that bilateral trade increased by 36% last year.

In this regard, he announced that the Kingdom has become Hungary's leading trading partner in Africa.

Mr. Szijjarto also said that the number of Moroccan students who benefit from scholarships in Hungary continues to increase.

The Hungarian minister stressed that bilateral cooperation is based on mutual respect, adding that the two countries share the same vision regarding international issues.

On the Moroccan Sahara issue, Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Peter Szijjártó, reiterated his country's position in support of the Autonomy Plan presented by the Kingdom of Morocco, which it "backs in international bodies."

"We are firmly convinced that the Autonomy Plan presented by Morocco gives hope of finding a way out of this conflict in compliance with UN resolutions," stressed Hungary's top diplomat, adding that his country is "very sensitive" to issues of territorial integrity and respect for the sovereignty of States.

In this context, Mr. Szijjártó made it clear that his country supports the Autonomy Plan in international bodies, citing in particular Hungary's recent intervention with the EU Court of Appeal on this issue, underlining, in conclusion, that his country will maintain this position of support for the Autonomy Initiative.
